Dialysis and Dialysis Catheter Insertion Overview
When kidneys fail, dialysis is a lifeline. It filters waste and excess fluids from the blood. The two main methods of dialysis are haemodialysis using a machine or peritoneal dialysis where a catheter inserted into the abdomen serves as a filter. The choice depends on the patient’s condition and needs.
It is a minimally invasive procedure. Under sterile conditions and often with ultrasound guidance, a thin, flexible tube is navigated into a large blood vessel (for haemodialysis) or the abdominal cavity (for peritoneal dialysis).
