Labour analgesia provides pain relief for women during childbirth, ensuring a more comfortable and manageable labour experience. Neuraxial labour analgesia (most commonly epidural or combined spinal-epidural), administered by anaesthesiologists is the most effective method of pain relief during childbirth. It is the only method that provides complete analgesia without maternal or fetal sedation. It enhances the birthing experience as the mother can stay awake and alert. It reduces pain and anxiety and allows for better focus and energy during the critical stages of labour. Other methods of labour analgesia include intravenous pain medications, nitrous oxide and spinal blocks.
