Blood Infections

Overview

Sepsis or Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS) is the first stage of blood infection. It occurs when the body’s immune system launches an overwhelming response to an infection. The symptoms include mental confusion and fast breathing. It requires intensive medical care with immediate administration of intravenous antibiotics to combat the infection. Patients receive fluids to maintain blood pressure and prevent organ damage. Vital signs are monitored and blood tests and imaging are done to assess the infection’s source and severity.
