Thyroid Disorders

Overview

It is the dysfunction of the butterfly-shaped gland at the base of the neck (thyroid). The two main types of thyroid disease are hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) and hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid). At Srinivasa Hospital, the treatment begins with a diagnosis of the type of disorder. Hypothyroidism is managed with synthetic thyroid hormone replacement (levothyroxine), while hyperthyroidism is treated with antithyroid medications, radioactive iodine therapy or sometimes surgery. Patients undergo regular blood tests to monitor thyroid function.
