Mirena Insertion and Removal

Overview

Mirena is a popular Intrauterine Device (IUD) utilised for both birth control and to treat heavy menstrual bleeding. It is a T-shaped plastic device that releases the hormone levonorgestrel directly into the uterus, providing effective contraception for up to five years.

At Srinivasa Hospital, Mirena insertion is a straightforward outpatient procedure. Prior to the insertion, our staff conduct a pelvic exam to determine the position and size of the uterus. The Mirena is then carefully placed inside the uterus using a specialised applicator. While the insertion process is typically quick, some women might experience temporary discomfort or cramping. It is essential to monitor for any signs of complications, such as intense pain or unusual discharge, after the procedure. A follow-up visit is usually recommended within a few weeks to ensure the IUD is correctly positioned.

Mirena removal is equally simple. We gently extract the device by pulling on its attached strings. The removal usually causes minimal discomfort, though some women might experience light bleeding or cramping afterwards. Given its efficiency, Mirena is a preferred choice for women seeking contraception or relief from heavy periods.
